To
His Excellency, Kevin HAMILTON, Canadian Extraordinary and
Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Romania
Your
Excellency,
Over
the past two months, Canadian postal workers were on strike in
order to force Canada Post, a federal public corporation, to
negotiate new collective agreements. The membership must have
solutions to their real problems: workplace injuries, forced
overtime, and equality for women, among others. On November 27th, the
Trudeau government saw fit to pass special legislation to force
postal workers back to work.
On
behalf of the “Worker's Romania” Association NGO,
which I represent here in Bucharest, I am addressing this letter to
the Canadian Diplomatic Mission in order to denounce the
undemocratic nature of "back-to-work legislation", which
goes against the Canadian Charter of Human Rights.
The
Trudeau government has claimed to be committed to taking on climate
change, and has committed vocally to other principles that our
Canadian colleagues were bargaining for like work-life balance,
health and safety, access to secure regular “middle-class” jobs,
and equality for women workers. The “Worker's Romania” Association
stands with the Canadian postal workers and politely asks the Trudeau
government to observe their rights.
We
strongly believe that Canada is not Mr. Trump's USA, therefore, the
Ottawa Government must solve the problems of postal workers without
unreasonable delay.
Moreover,
postal workers undertake their activities, many times, in extreme
whether conditions, yet another reason why they should be worthy of
your regard and admiration because of the good qualities and
capabilities that they bring to your country.
I
would therefore hope that now that I have placed my concerns in defense
of my Canadian colleagues, the Trudeau administration will
have a comprehensive approach to consider how our concerns can be
addressed so that our Canadian colleagues can work safely in
everyone’s interest.
I
look forward to your acknowledgement and taking this matter forward
in a timely manner.
Yours
sincerely,
Ciprian
POP
Secretary
General
“Worker's
Romania” Association

December 2018
